It's a Mystery!

It’s a Mystery!

For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth. Psalm 33:4-5 NLT

I was thinking about the ‘debate’ last night between Bill Nye and Dr. Ham- Science vs Creation. I did not watch it, but from reading the reactions on FB and blogs, I can tell that nothing much has changed since the days of Darwin. Science still can’t conclusively prove evolution, while Religion can notconclusively prove the existence of God or the Creation story in Genesis. My position is that if Science could prove evolution they would have done so by now. They do have compelling circumstantial evidence and, as Bill Nye did, appeal to the ‘Reasonable man’.

The concept of ‘Reasonable Man’ is not new. It is a legal term:

A hypothetical person who exercises “those qualities of attention, knowledge, intelligence and judgment which society requires of its members for the protection of their own interest and the interests of others. -Barrons Legal Dictionary.

Much like religion, Science relies on Faith. Among other things, faith is required to fill in the gaps in the fossil record. Perhaps the Reasonable Man is expected to have some Faith?

However, Religion (Christianity) is based on Faith, which by definition defies reason! The Book of Hebrews Chapter 11 verse 1 tells us:

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

I’m not smart enough to know HOW God did it, but I have faith enough that God is the answer to the question of what (or who) is behind the ‘laws of Nature’.

Reading some of Bill Nye’s quotes from last night gave me a chuckle, When I was a kid in catholic school, I was the skeptic that would fire off the annoying questions to the poor nuns that had to deal with me. I’d ask questions like ‘How did Noah get EVERY animal on to the ark?’ and “If all of life were wiped out in the flood, where did Black people come from?” The nuns would usually respond with ‘It’s a mystery.’ Last night, when he was asked questions like, “How did intelligent life evolve from lifeless elements, Bill responded, ‘It’s a mystery!”
