Tis the Season for Christmas tunes! A favorite of mine is my son Daniel Ballesteros' version of Joy to the World. As I listened to it the other day, a line stuck in my head, “Let every heart prepare Him room”.
As Christ followers we have to learn to intentionally make room for Jesus - to "Prepare Him room”. We hustle and bustle, and make our plans, fill our calendars and we forget to make room for Jesus to come in. Wouldn’t we be surprised if He came into one of our holiday gatherings in a way we had never looked for Him to come!
Oswald Chambers said, “Do not look for God to come in any particular way, but look for Him.”
That is the way to make room for Him- look ‘outside the box’. Be expecting Him to come, but do not look for Him in the usual ways. The longer we have known God, the more set our routines can become. Unexpected moments when God breaks in are the best!
I like to say that in my life, I can see God best in the rear view mirror. Looking back at my life, I can see how circumstances were used by God to get me where I am today. How cool would it be to start catching God in the act? To meet him in the middle of those circumstances and work with him?
Many of the times that Jesus interacted with someone, it was by some unusual circumstance- Zacchaeus hanging out in a tree, the woman at the well, the paralytic being dropped down from the ceiling, etc…We tend to think we have God figured out, yet He almost always comes in a way we least expect. God meets us while we are doing life – so be on the lookout- ‘Prepare Him room’ by starting your day in communication with Him!
While enjoying the Christmas season, let’s be on the lookout for Jesus coming to interact with us in our activities and ‘prepare him room’!
Keep your life so constant in its contact with God that His surprising power may break out on the right hand and on the left. Always be in a state of expectancy, and see that you leave room for God to come in as He likes.
